It's been a long time since I have written a post. Life has been overwhelming and I find myself struggling to find time for the small things in life. My life is now run by my google calendar and a keurig. One of the activities that dominate my Saturday mornings is my son's baseball games. This spring was Luke's first time playing baseball. He had absolutely no experience playing baseball.
When I signed him up it was mostly to make sure that he is active and not on the electronics. Anyway for the first 4 games and practices Luke didn't hit the ball and he was feeling very discouraged. His outfield skills also needed help. My husband and I took him to the park on Sundays and that helped a little but still no hits during the games.
My nephew, who is a college student spent a weekend with us and because he played baseball most of his life, I asked him to practice with Luke in the front yard.
My nephew is one of the most driven people I know, he has always had intrinsic motivation. When he was practicing with Luke he offered support and words of encouragement. But one thing he said to him, made a huge impact on Luke and he has made hits every game since.
My nephew Joey said, "Luke do you want to hit the ball today?" referring to his morning game. Luke said, "Yes". Joey went on "All you have to do is believe in yourself and you will hit the ball. I will be watching you and cheering really loud so you can hear me." Luke didn't say a word but you can tell he was listening.
Luke made a hit that day and went to first base. We all cheered like crazy people. Luke had a big smile on his face under his helmet. After the game, I asked him "How did you hit the ball?" Luke said "I just believed in myself and I hit it." He saw results and now every time he wants to achieve something I remind him about the first time he hit the ball.
